Orangetown: Use "Extreme Caution" Trick or Treating

All Halloween activities are canceled in Piermont and the Town of Orangetown is advising residents to "exercise extreme caution" when trick or treating Wednesday.

The Town of Orangetown did not cancel Halloween activities, but officials are advising that parents "exercise extreme caution" Wednesday in Orangetown, Nyack, South Nyack, Grandview and Piermont.

The Village of Piermont has canceled all Halloween activities, including trick or treating and the annual haunted house organized by the Piermont Fire Department. Piermont Police Chief Michael O'Shea is asking that residents stay out of downtown during recovery efforts.

There are still power lines and trees on the ground in Orangetown from Hurricane Sandy. Orangetown officials are recommending the following safety measures if parents allow their children to go trick or treating:

  1. All children should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
  2. Do not go trick or treating on secondary roads, where hazardous conditions are more likely to still exist. Do not walk around barricades placed by the Orangetown Police or highway department.
  3. Do not trick or treat after dark, when it will be much more difficult to see dangers such as downed power lines.

In his statement regarding the closing of Pearl River Schools Wednesday, Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Morgano advised parents against taking their children trick or treating.

"While it is a parental decision, I would suggest that the danger of being out with exposed wires and falling branches outweigh any benefits of trick or treating," Morgano said.
