Orangtown Police Give Lt. Jack Lyman Award

Steve Caruso received the award, which honors members of the Orangetown Auxiliary Police

The Orangetown Police Department and Orangetown Auxiliary Police presented the Lt Jack Lyman award Tuesday night.

The award is given to a current member of the auxiliary who exemplifies the dedication and service demonstrated by Lyman during his years with the auxliary. 

This year, Orangetown Police Chief Kevin Nulty and Marshall Becker of the Orangetown Auxiliary Police presented the award to Steve Caruso.

"(Lyman) took me under his wing and I miss him," Caruso said.

Nulty reads a dedication to Lyman, who passed away, each year at this time. A video of the dedication is attatched to this report, along with another one including parts of the presentation. Members of Lyman's family were also in attendance.

"To Eileen (Lyman's wife) and the rest of his family, thank you for giving us Jack for all those years," Nulty said. "His memory will live on forever."

Nulty also gave some history of the auxiliary and talked about the importance of the unit to Orangetown. He specifically mentioned the role they play in helping keep people safe during events such as the upcoming St. Patrick's Day Parade. 

"I think the of themen who were civil defense officers (the origins of the auxiliary," Nulty said. "If they could look at hte unit today, they would be proud they planted the seeds that led to such a professional unit here in Orangetown. It goes back to the original meission, to help the police keep people safe."
