Pearl River Week in Review: Hadeler Hardware Closes; Model Trains on Track

One Pearl River tradition closed its doors while another began its annual visit this weekend.

Hadeler Hardware held a closing sale Saturday, with signs calling the day the end of an era for the family-owned business that first opened in Pearl River in 1905. The store has been advertising a retirement close-out for weeks and the new owners, Tom Clifford Karate, already had displays up on one end of the building. 

Up Central Ave. from Hadeler's closing, the 23rd annual Pearl River Model Train Show began its run Saturday. The Bergen County Model Railroad Club brings the show to the United Methodist Church in Pearl River every year. 

Those were just two of the stories on Pearl River Patch this past week.

• Pearl River mourned the loss of Tommy Argenti, 18, a 2012 Pearl River High School graduate who was struck and killed by a vehicle after a hockey game in Newark, NJ. Calling hours are 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home in West Nyack. The funeral mass is 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine's Church in Blauvelt. 
• Orangetown continues to discuss the possible elimination of the position of Receiver of Taxes. 
• Orangetown honored three people for their contributions to the Orangetown Substance Abuse Committee -- Pearl River High School Principal William Furdon, Orangetown Police Captain Donald Butterworth and Councilman Denis Troy.  
• Patch covered Gov. Andrew Cuomo's visit to Rockland County, during which he covered topics including the state budget, gun control, education and jobs.
• Richard Lennox was arrested and accused of selling prescription drugs from his home in Pearl River. 
• Pearl River junior John Muldoon and sophomore James Kelly both won individual championships at the Section 1 Division I wrestling finals. 
• Senior Marissa Scognamiglio, an all-state soccer player, continued to spark the Pearl River girls basketball team with her versatile play from the point guard position. 
• The Pearl River Athletic Department celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day and presented the Lauren Buonocore Award to former coach Brenda Sommerlad.
• Pearl River swept the team titles at the Section 1 Class B Indoor Track and Field Championships, with distance runners Kelly Hayes and Brian Cook each winning two events. 
• The Rotary Club of Pearl River announced that this year's soapbox race is scheduled for June 2. 
• The Pearl River School district announced combined registration and screening for incoming kindergarten students beginning Feb. 20 at Lincoln Ave., Evans Park and Franklin Ave. Elementary Schools. 
• Parents showed their support for their children as readers with the annual play on the penultimate day of the Parents as Reading Partners program at Evans Park Elementary School. All of Pearl River's elementary schools have some version of the approach, meant to help parents support their child's reading, including the Rockland Read-In last Friday.
