Pearl River Week in Review: Relay for Life, County Charge-Backs

The Orangetown Relay for Life and the ongoing debate regarding Rockland County charge-backs were among the highlights of the past week in Pearl River. Take a look back and a glance ahead.

The Orangetown Relay for Life drew hundreds to the Central Ave. Field in Pearl River to raise money for the American Cancer Society and honor people whose lives have been touched by cancer.

That was just one of the major stories of the past week in Pearl River:

  • __ June 12 in connection with vandalism at the high school the previous week. More arrests could come this week.
  • Orangetown Police also __ and resisting arrest outside Gildea's Bar Friday.
  • Pearl River Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Hardy organized a __ June 13 at Emmett's Castle at Blue Hill, drawing approximately 100 representatives from communities in Rockland County and Montvale, NJ.
  • That same day, the Rockland County Coaches' Association __at the Pearl River Elks Club, honoring the accomplishments of local coaches.
  • The debate regarding Rockland County charge-backs to the towns continued. Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart was among those who joined Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland) for a __ announcing mandate relief legislation that would require the state to assume the costs of the charge-back fees for Rockland residents enrolled in the baccalaureate and masters degree programs at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), saving the county $1 million in costs that would be passed along to the towns otherwise. 
  • Earlier in the week at its regular meeting, the __.
  • At the same meeting, the __. The council also _approved funding for operation graduation_ at local high schools.
  • The Pearl River team of __ in a school-record time of 12:01.43 at the National Scholastic Sports Foundation New Balance Outdoor Track & Field National Championship at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, NC. They earned All-American status with their performance.

The Pearl River School District wraps up the 2011-12 school year this week, including the following celebrations.

  • Lincoln Avenue Elementary School fourth grade promotion 9:30 a.m. Monday.
  • Franklin Avenue Elementary School fourth grade promotion 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Evans Park Elementary School fourth grade promotion 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
  • Pearl River Middle School seventh grade moving up ceremony 6 p.m. at the high school.
  • Pearl River High School graduation Thursday, including graduation rehearsal at 11 a.m., graduation ceremony at 6 p.m. and project graduation starting at 11 p.m.

The Orangetown Town Board will hold a special meeting 2 p.m. Monday to discuss home rule legislation regarding Rockland Psychiatric Center and Children's Center.
