(UPDATE) Rockland Day Care Marks Its 30th Anniversary

Facility honors its “Founding Mothers” and advises public of enrollment opportunities

Rockland Day Care recently honored its “Founding Mothers” and its first director during a 30th  Anniversary Celebration. The Pomona-based facility, which began in 1983 serving as a non-profit worksite daycare for county employees, now offers enrollment on a space-available basis to the general public.

The Center’s ceremony honored its “Founding Mothers:” Sandy King of New City, Audrey Mullin of Blauvelt, Rebecca Spar of Hackensack and Carol Booth of Hastings-on-Hudson. They were recognized for their leadership in providing quality childcare and its benefits for both working parents and employers. Rockland Day Care’s first director, Marcia Sheer of Pomona, was also praised for her role in establishing the center in 1983, which made it possible for more women to enter Rockland’s workforce.

Rockland Day Care has grown from a borrowed, two room center to a dedicated, state of the art childcare facility with eight classrooms for infants through pre-school age children. As part of its 30th Anniversary, the center added a Nursing Room and is undertaking a “paint and refresh” program for its classrooms. Rockland Day Care (formerly Rockland Worksite Daycare) is located in Building R at the County Health Complex in Pomona.

It is one of the longest-running daycare programs in Rockland and one of the few county-sponsored day care centers in the country. According to a release from the Center, in the 1980s the percentage of children under the age of five in a regular day care arrangement began to increase from 22% to about 60%, where it stands today. It further states the Center for American Progress reports fewer than one-in-three children today have a full-time, stay-at-home parent.

Rates include the cost of two snacks as well as a hot lunch. The fee for infants, between six weeks and 23 months old is $260 per week. The cost for toddlers between 24 and 35 months old is $213 a week. The rate for preschoolers from 36 to 60 months old is $210 per week.

Director Carol Diemer said the center has a capacity of 82 children which includes 16 infants, 16 toddlers, 24 three-year-olds and 26 four-year-olds.

"We are also a Universal Pre-K site," she said, noting the Center is open from 7 a.m. till 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

As a single mother with a toddler, I found Rockland Day Care to be really good. My (now) ex was chipping in, but we couldn't afford much. It was a good price range and the staff was warm and professional. My first child is graduating from middle school now and I know he is doing so well because he was looked after while I was going back to school and working to keep a roof over our heads. Thanks.

That's great! It was originally strictly for county employees but then they opened it to the public. Ilan Schoenberger was one of the prime movers behind it. I'm guessing you're not a county employee?.
