Sierra Club Endorses David Carlucci

This is Carlucci's second environmental group endorsement.

Citing his strong opposition to hydraulic fracturing and opposition to the Hudson River desalination plant proposal, the Sierra Club officially endorsed Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) for the 38th State Senate District.

This marks the second major environmental endorsement for Carlucci. In August, the New York League of Conservation Voters endorsed the incumbent state senator.

"Sierra Club endorses State Senator David Carlucci in the 38th Senatorial District for 2012, in appreciation of his record on some of the environmental issues that matter most to Rockland County voters: his opposition to the proposal for desalination for Rockland's drinking water, his strong opposition to hydraulic fracturing, and his work to help close Indian Point," said Peggy Kurtz of the Rockland Sierra Club & Sierra Club Lower Hudson Group.  "We look forward to working together to protect our air, our drinking water, and our river."

In their endorsement letter, the Sierra Club thanked Carlucci for writing to the New York State Public Service Commission and Department of Environmental Conservation, asking them to reopen hearings in order to give a thorough review of alternative proposals to desalination in Rockland County.

“Whether it is working to protect our pristine landscape from hydrofracking or supporting regulations that protect our drinking water, I have always remained committed to common sense measures that protect our environment,” said Carlucci.

Founded in 1892, the Sierra Club is America’s oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, with over 1.3 million members in North America.  Their mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out those objectives.

Carlucci's opponent in the race is Republican Janis Castaldi of Ossining.
