State Senate, Assembly Sign Off on Orangetown Park Land Swap

The New York State Assembly and Senate both approved Orangetown's request to remove the parkland designation from Broadacres Golf Course in Orangeburg.
In its place, Orangetown would designate another part of the Rockland Psychiatric Center property as park land, a section that would include the shore along Lake Tappan.

Assembly Bill 8067 and Senate Bill 5840 both passed, so now the request awaits the signature of Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The Orangetown pushed the measure quickly to get it done before the end of the stated legislative session.

The fate of Broadacres has been a major topic of discussion since Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart suggested closing it a year ago. He has stated that he intends to leave funding for the nine-hole golf course out of his budget proposal for 2014.

Orangetown has a Request for Proposals (RFP) out seeking private management. Stewart has said that changing the designation could make it easier for private management and it would give the town greater flexibility if it looks into other uses for the land.
