Items being accepted include:

  • Wearable clothing: women, men, and children
  • Shoes, Belts, Handbags
  • Linens, Sheets, Blankets
  • Hard Toys
  • Stuffed Animals

The committee cannot accept mattresses, furniture, appliances, or carpeting.

In cooperation with Useful Threads, an organization dedicated to sending donations internationally, and the Pearl River School District PTA, Sherri Preston and Stacey Maher organized the drive to benefit all Pearl River schools.

The Pearl River School District PTA will receive 15 cents for every pound of items donated, plus a $50 bonus for every 5,000 pounds. Items donated will not be destroyed. They will be sent people in need overseas.

"We wanted to replace some of the funds lost to the PTAs from the current budget cutbacks, while benefiting people in need in less fortunate economies," explained Preston, adding that it could not have been successful without the diligence, research and discussions with the Pearl River School District authorities.

The committee asks that everyone donate generously and says that the heavier the items are, the better, so items such as heavy winter coats and blankets are especially desireable.

Donations will be accepted from noon to 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Pirate Cove in the Pearl River High School. Pirate Cove can be found in the back parking lot of the high school, near the soccer fields and tennis courts.
