Zebrowski Pushes for All Electronic Tolls on TZ Bridge During Rush Hour

Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski (D-New City) announced a plan to lessen congestion on the Tappan Zee Bridge Monday.

Zebrowski will introduce legislation that would direct the NYS Thruway Authority to allow only electronic tolling on the bridge during rush hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. 

"Congestion on the Tappan Zee has been an ongoing issue for several years, but these past few weeks have been particularly difficult for commuters," Zebrowski said. "All Electronic Tolling programs have been successful in decreasing traffic congestion and improving commuting times."

According to a release from Zebrowski's office, similar programs have been implemented in Florida and Texas and the MTA recently began using it on the Henry Hudson Bridge.

Drivers without an EZ-Pass would be able to drive through an All-Electronic Tolling lane, where their cars would be identified by their license plates. They would then be billed for the toll.

The program would run through Dec. 31, 2017, when an analysis of the impact of the program would be completed. That study would be used to determine if the program should continue.
