Wettje's logic: Troy, Diviny letting down O'Town Taxpayers

By Robert Tompkins, CPA, MPA

It appears Orangetown Supervisor candidate Walter Wettje disagrees with Town Board Members Troy and Diviny of his same political parties.

In a letter to the “Our Town” Editor entitled “Wettje endorsement response” (10/30/13) he states Town Supervisor Andy Stewart “fell short in providing the caliber of leadership that we need and that was never more evident than at last week’s Town Board meeting where he let the Orangetown taxpayers down by:

Voting to override Gov. Cuomo’s 2% tax cap. Withdrawing $3.5 million from the town’s surplus account to pay next year’s expenses. Recommending an 11 percent increase in town spending in 2014.”

Assuming the above evidence is accurate it appears Mr. Wettje’s view must be Mr. Troy and Mr. Diviny is also letting Orangetown taxpayers down by voting for Mr. Stewart’s budget on October 22, exactly as he presented it on September 24, as they did not propose any amendments, nor did anyone else. They indicated that night they voted for it because the Supervisor's budget is below the 2% total property tax revenues cap increase.

However following Mr. Wettje's logic they both are just as guilty as Mr. Stewart. Could it be given all the Town Board Members voted for that Preliminary Budget they all are letting Orangetown taxpayers down?

Last week “Our Town” newspaper (10/23/13) endorsed Mr. Stewart stating “… Stewart’s style is understated, one that enables him to be quietly effective in a job that requires executive as well as legislative skills. We think he’s done a good job over the past two years and deserves re-election.”

I agree. The two candidates are like day and night and I have directly observed both of them performing their civil duties. I am concerned Mr. Wettje could very well let O’Town down if he is elected Town Supervisor. You can read why in my October 10th blog located at:

Please vote for the Candidate and not the Party.  Here’s why:

This Tuesday is Election Day. Please don't let O'Town Down!
