Legislator Day Officiates Big Brothers Big Sister 2013 Graduation Program

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland (BBBSR) held their annual mentor/mentee graduation ceremony at the County Legislature at the invitation of County Legislator Ed Day.   BBBSR, the local chapter of the national organization, carefully pairs children between the ages of six and 18 that are facing adversity with a caring adult mentor to establish a one-to-one supportive relationship to help the child avoid risky behavior and to serve as a positive role model by providing counsel, friendship, constructive example and reinforcement.

“Role models make a difference in the lives of children who face adversity,” said Legislator Day who serves as the legislature’s liaison to the organization. “National studies show that BBBS programs serve this need through its strategic programs and the well-thought-out pairing process of one child in need to one caring adult.  Studies show that educational performance improves, as do relationships with family and peers, interests broaden and the child experiences success, often times a commodity they have not experienced in their short lifetime. Executive Director Gillian Ballard, along with the professional staff and the Board of Directors, lead by the Honorable Judge Scott Ugell has done an excellent job to carry out the mission of the organization. ”

Each mentor and mentee pair spoke about how their relationship developed through conversations, shared activities, and outings.  All pairs acknowledged that the relationship had mutually positive impact and all looked forward to continued friendship.
