Cub Scout Pack 22 Keeps Pearl River Beautiful

Cub Scout Pack 22 participated in BOCES Keep Rockland Beautiful May 1st at the Central Ave field in Pearl River.

Bright and early, Cub Scout Pack 22 was hard at work earning their Keep Rockland Beautiful badge and crossing off another project on their way to their World Conservation Awards.

The pack, led by Ellen Hughes, met up at Central Ave. field in downtown Pearl River to clean up by the gazebo and the playground.

"It was great," Hughes said. "The kids were all over. One group would clean an area and then the next group would look over the same area and find even more. It looks clean on the surface. It's surprising."

The pack is part of the Hudson Valley Council Boy and Cub Scouts Rockland District. The boys are in grades one through five and attend Lincoln Avenue and Evans Park Elementary Schools.

Each school has a den, making two dens per grade, excluding the current third-grade den. The dens are as follows:

Pack 22 consists of dens from each grade, making the pack a diverse but strong group. Some sisters and girl scouts came out to help as well, rounding out the group who helped clean up the area.

Hughes explained that events like these are much more than opportunities to earn badges. The cub scouts learn about what it means to live in a community and how to help the community thrive.

"This field is school district land. It's used so often and the kids all go to Evans or Lincoln Ave (elementary schools)," said Hughes. "They're learning that it's not a burden to give back, but it's fun. They can come out here with friends and help the community they live in."

Kelli Arno, a parent and den leader who helped organize the event, said that the pack has participated in Keep Rockland Beautiful for the past few years and it has always been a success.

"The kids got their badges and a packet of seeds to bring home," said Arno. "This is also one of the projects they need for their World Conservation Awards. We were going to do this rain or shine, but I'm glad it was shine."
