Daily Sports Digest: Pearl River Cross Country Wins Section

Pearl River continues to dominate in cross country as both the boy’s and girl’s teams finished in first place in the Section 1 Class B Championships at Bowdoin Park this weekend.

Sport: Boy’s Cross Country

Game: Section 1 Class B Championships

Score: Pearl River 67 (1st Place)

Highlights: Kieran Brennan led the Pirates with a time of 17:00.26 as they successfully defended their section championship. Steven McNiff and Joe Clinton also finished in the top ten. Pearl River overcame the the loss of one of its top runners when Brian Edsall had to drop out of the race due to injury.

Sport: Girl’s Cross Country

Game: Section 1 Class B Championships

Score: Pearl River 27 (1st Place)

Highlights: Molly Shine finished first overall with a time of 19:11.90 and teammates Ceilia McMorrow and Kelly Hayes finished third and fourth respectively giving the Pirates a 33rd consecutive title.

Shine was not even a sure thing to run in the championship after waking up with a sore Achilles tendon.

"When I woke up, I could hardly walk so naturally I was heartbroken," Shine said. "But thankfully, Tommy Lynn, my physical therapist, was able to help me and so was the trainer at the meet.  By the time everything was done, I had only 30 minutes to stretch, warm up and get to the starting line.  When the gun went off, my adrenaline must have taken over and masked most of the pain. 

"I was thrilled to win the race, but more importantly I was happy that my team won."

Sport: Boy’s Cross Country

Game: Section 1 Class C Championships

Score: Albertus Magnus 449 (16th Place)

Highlights: Sean McNiff was the lone Falcon to finish in the top 75 in Friday’s meet. 

Sport: Girl’s Cross Country

Game: Section 1 Class C Championships

Highlights: Sophomore Grace Ostolozaga led the Falcons with a time of 26:23.42.

Game: Pearl River @ Somers

Score: Somers Won 1-0

Highlights: Pearl River’s season ended after Somers scored in the second half for the games only goal in the Section 1 Class A semifinals. Francesca Cobuzzi had 18 saves for the Pirates.

Sport: Girl’s Soccer

Game: Albertus Magnus @ Briarcliff

Score:  Briarcliff Won 4-0

Highlights: The Nomadic Falcon soccer season ended over the weekend as the 14th-seeded Cinderella team fell to Briarcliff. Tara Condon had 13 saves in the loss.

Today’s Schedule:

The preliminaries for the Section 1 girl’s swimming championship will be held at Felix Festa middle school.

The Pearl River varsity ice hockey team will hold its first practice of the season today. The rest of Pearl River's varsity and JV teams begin practice Nov. 14.
