Five Things: Penn Relays, Pearl River Tennis Tournament Highlight Big Sports Week

Pearl River sports teams face a big week ahead if the weather permits.

Boys Tennis Team's Turn

The Pearl River golf team won its tournament last week. Now the boys tennis team will have its turn to bring together local rivals as six teams will compete at two sites in the Pearl River Boys Tennis Tournament.

Pearl River will take on League 4B rivals Albertus Magnus, Nanuet, Nyack, and Tappan Zee as well as East Ramapo Friday and Saturday, with matches held at the high school and at Cherry Brook Park on Franklin Avenue. Check back with Patch for more details later this week.

Making Up for Lost Time

Due to rain and other complications, the Pearl River baseball team has only played three regular games and last week's wood-bat exhibition against Tappan Zee. The Pirates should be much busier this week, with four games on the schedule -- Monday against Suffern at home, a rescheduled game against Tappan Zee Tuesday, a trip to Clarkstown North Wednesday and a home game against North Saturday.

Premium Pitching Matchup

The Pearl River softball team will also take a trip to Clarkstown North Wednesday, setting up a matchup of standout pitchers -- Pearl River's Katie O'Flynn and Clarkstown North's Danielle DeStaso, a Division I recruit who is committed to Seton Hall.

Girls Lacrosse Puts Undefeated Record On The Line

The Pearl River girls lacrosse team will have to put together a strong week to keep its undefeated record intact. Nyack, the 2010 Section 1 Class C champion which moved up to Class B for this season, will come to Pearl River's upper field 4:15 p.m. Tuesday. After taking on Nanuet Thursday, Pearl River will play host to another one of the best teams in Rockland County when Suffern comes to visit 10 a.m. Saturday.

Running With the Big Boys, Girls

Pearl River's Track and Field teams will send representatives to one of the most prestigious meets in the country this week, the Penn Relays, which will be held Thursday through Saturday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA.

The event draws elite athletes at the high school, college and international level. More to come on Patch later this week.
