Lady Pirate Field Hockey Strives to Move Program Forward

Senior-dominated squad was scheduled to open its season at Nyack today, but the contest was postponed due to rain and wet field conditions.

Boasting a roster that includes thirteen seniors and three returning All-League 4B players, the Pearl River High School field hockey team is looking to improve on last seasson's sub .500 mark last season.

"We have a developing program where the addition of a modified program for seventh and eighth graders has been a big help,” said second-year coach Shane Carlacci.

The Lady Pirates added five freshmen to this year’s squad who could contribute.

“They all have previous experience, most of them played in the modified program and on the junior varsity," Carlacci said. "That is very helpful because we don’t have to spend time teaching the fundamentals.

“I see a great deal of commitment.  Many of the players have played in winter and summer leagues and attended a summer camp.  We have very solid athletes who have been good at any sport they played.”

The all-league selections include seniors Adrienne Ammirati, Gabby Moreno and Sarah Nelson. Moreno joins seniors Erin Garvey and Shannon McKiernan as the team’s tri-captains.

”This is Shannon’s second year as a captain and she stands out for her leadership," Carlacci said.

Carlacci looks to freshman Jackie Dowling and sophomore Deidre O’Malley as key newcomers who will make their presence felt for the Lady Pirates.

The schedule in League 4B play includes home and home series with Clarkstown North, Clarkstown South, Nanuet, North Rockland, Nyack
and Suffern.

“I expect us to be competitive with the top teams in our league," Carlacci said. "This year we are working on scoring more and being a stronger offensive presence.

“This is the hardest-working team that I have ever coached.  You ask them to be here for practice at noon and they are here at 11:30.”
