MLK Oratory Contest Taking Registrations

Orange & Rockland Utilities and four local colleges are sponsoring the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Contest 7 p.m. Saturday Feb. 8 at the Nyack Center on Depew Ave. in Nyack.

The event is open to Rockland County youth ages 13 to 20 and there will be scholarship awards to the winners. All applicants must register by Feb. 3. Nyack College, Dominican College, Rockland Community College and St. Thomas Aquinas College are all sponsors for the event, which is part of the Nyack Center's Black History Month Celebration. 

Participants will deliver a three-to-five minute segment of a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They will be judged on content, comprehension of the material, interpretation, keeping the delivery within the time frame and overall presentation. 

The awards given to speakers finishing first, second and third will include scholarship opportunities at the four participating colleges. Those awards are $1,000; $500 and $250 respectively. Also, awards of $500, $300 and $200 will be presented as scholarships for other universities.
