Pearl River Girls Cross Country Defeats North Rockland, Suffern

Pearl River boys no longer unbeaten with losses to Suffern and North Rockland Tuesday at Pearl River Middle School.

The depth of the Pearl River girls cross country team came to the fore yesterday as they extended their consecutive dual meet victory streak to 188 by edging Suffern 27-30 and routing North Rockland 17-40 at the Pearl River Middle School course.

The short-handed Pearl River boys did not fare as well seeing their season record fall to 5-2 after suffering close losses to Suffern, 27-28, and North Rockland, 25-31.

Coach Dan Doherty was happy to remain unbeaten, but saw room for improvement in his team's performance.

“I thought that we were not great," Doherty said. "We were sloppy.  We didn’t make things happen and didn’t compete as well as I had hoped.  But we did get out of here with two wins against two good teams.  We lived for another day.”

Other Lady Pirates who finished near the top were Kelly Hayes in fourth place, Maria Kohlbrenner in the fifth spot and Ceili McMorrow in seventh.

Boys coach Mike Kiernan knew he had a daunting task facing stiff
competition without two of his top runners. Kieran Brennan and Joe Clinton who were both unavailable due to injuries.  Brian Edsall ran extremely well, placing second overall behiund North Rockland’s Brett Bernard.

“Brian looked really good," Kiernan said. “Another kid that stepped
up was Brian Cook (sixth place, second among Pearl River runners).  “He ran by far his best race. Brendan Bateman also ran the best race of his two-year career and really improved our back end.”

Stephen McNiff finished in eigthth place to round out the Pirate top ten finishers.

“You are never happy with a couple of losses but I told the boys after the meet was over that I was proud of the way they stepped up," Kiernan said. "I think that we will be a better team for it down the road.  Both these schools are ranked in Class A, the largest class.  Our kids didn’t back down despite the circumstances.  We will see both of them in four weeks at the county championship on October 27th at Bear Mountain.”
