Each year the Pearl River Athletic Department presents the Lauren Buonocore National Girls & Women in Sports Day Award to honor past and current contributors to women's athletics in the district.
Pearl River High School science teacher Brenda Sommerlad, a former track and basketball coach in the district, received the award for 2013.
Sommerlad, a member of current Pearl River girls basketball Head Coach Lorraine Moylan's Federation Championship team at Albertus Magnus in 1990-91, gave up coaching to spend more time with her family, but in addition to teaching in the district, she runs the scoreboard at home basketball games.
Buonocore was the first varsity lacrosse coach at Pearl River High School and the district's National Girls & Women in Sports Day Award was renamed for her after she passed away from breast cancer.
The theme for 2013 National Girls & Women in Sports Day was Girls in Sports, an Investment in the Future.
