Pearl River Schools: Budget Vote, Board Election Tuesday

Polls will open at Pearl River High School's Pirate Cove from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the Pearl River School District 2013-14 budget vote and board of election vote.
The Pearl River Board of Education adopted the proposed $52 million budget May 7. Taxes increase 1.68 percent for homeowners, 6.03 percent for businesses in Pearl River. The tax levy increase of 3.5 percent is within the state mandated tax cap due to built-in exclusions in the law.
The original budget plan called for the elimination of 17.7 full time positions for financial reasons, though due to an increase in state aid, eight positions will be re-hired once the budget passes.
If the budget fails twice, the district would have to go with the tax levy from 2012-13, which would lead to more cuts.
"If the budget does not pass and we have to use last year's levy, we'll be short another million dollars or so," Morgano said at the May 7 meeting. "Don't assume it will pass. Let's get everybody out to vote."
Two seats on the Pearl River Board of Education are also on the ballot, but incumbents Michael Clohessy and Robert Davis are running unopposed.
Absentee ballots are due by 5 p.m. to District Clerk Mary Flanagan in the district administration building at 135 West Crooked Hill Road in Pearl River.
