Pearl River Schools To Set Tax Rates

The Pearl River Board of Education is expected to vote to approve the tax rates for the school district and Pearl River Public Library for 2013-14 during its meeting 7:30 p.m. tonight in the district administration building.

The tax rate increase will actually be lower for residents of the Pearl River School District. The homestead tax rate is going up 0.71 percent rather than the estimated 1.68 percent. According to Pearl River Director of Operations Quinton Van Wynen's tax levy recommendation, base proportion shift favoring homeowners and local assessments were higher than expected.

The base proportion shift favoring homeowners more will contribute to a higher rate for businesses in Pearl River in 2013-14, 11.59 percent, as will lower assessments. Tax rate settlements and new PILOT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes) agreements contributed to tax assessments in the district coming in lower than expected.

The school board is also expected to vote on contracts for bus transportation and swimming pool usage during Tuesday's meeting. Pearl River will continue to hold swim meets and practices at Felix Festa Middle School, a building in the Clarkstown School District. Pearl River will also hold preseason practices at Nauraushaun Swim Club in Pearl River from Aug. 20 to Sept. 8, which has saved the district money as well as providing a more convenient location since the arrangement began in 2011.
