Pearl River Student's Project Takes Flight

Look to the skies later today and if all goes as planned, you may see the work of Pearl River High School junior Rob Gullo floating to the ground.

If all goes according to plan, the capsule and weather balloon that Gullo launched this morning in Pennsylvania will land in Nanuet.

Through Pearl River's independent study program, Gullo was able to follow his interest in aerospace engineering. Working with teacher Stephen Lonergan, Gullo engaged in projects such as building a single prop airplane out of balsa wood, adapting parts he could find in school.

His final project involved sending a capsule into space with a large weather balloon. The capsule includes high definition cameras and sensors which take pictures and record data from the flight.

With help from Lonergan, seventh grader Kyle Muldoon, graduate Taylor Flynn and his parents, Bob and Erica, Gullo launched his balloon from Pennsylvania near Bethlehem this morning and is expected to land in Nanuet this afternoon.

Editor's note: Thanks to Carol Muldoon for these images from Wednesday morning's launch.
