Pearl River Weekend: Fishing Contest, Concert for Paula, Sullivan Fundrasier, Walk for Babies

The 28th Annual Jake Amann Fishing Contest In Veterans Memorial Park kicks off a busy weekend in Pearl River Saturday morning, followed by the Concert for Paula Bohovesky, Dan Sullivan Foundation Fundraiser and Rockland March for Babies.

Participants in the 28th Annual Jake Amann Fishing Contest will come to Veterans Memorial Park in Orangeburg from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, but that is just the beginning of a busy weekend in Pearl River.

The Concert for Paula -- A Celebration of a Life and Dan Sullivan Foundation Fundraiser are both set for 7 p.m. Saturday and the Rockland County March of Dimes March for Babies begins 10 a.m. Sunday at Blue Hill Plaza.

The fishing contest, presented by the Rotary Club of Pearl River, is free and open to children ages 15 and under. There are prizes for "special catches," with the grand prize a $1,000 savings bond. 

There will be two events honoring the memory of Pearl River natives no longer with us Saturday night.

Concert for Paula Bohovesky

The Concert for Paula -- A Celebration of a Life will be held 7 p.m. Saturday in the Pearl River High School Auditorium. Tickets cost $20 and proceeds benefit the Paula Bohovesky Memorial, Petitions for Paula Foundation, and the Paula Bohovesky Performing Arts Scholarship.

Bohovesky was the 16-year-old Pearl River High School sophomore, was murdered while walking home Oct. 28, 1980

Performers will include internationally-known violinist Eileen Ivers, the Rockland Conservatory of Music String Orchestra with Conductor Anna Teige, the Pearl River High School Choir with Director Shareen Way, singer Shirley Crabbe (PRHS Class of 1981), singer Mary Ellen Petti, singer (PRHS Class of 1982), singers John Carson and Ed Walters (PRHS Class of 1982) and Chris Murphy and Friends.

Paula's mother, Lois Bohovesky, will be there with a poetry reading. Some of Paula Bohovesky's former teachers will be in attendance, as will 

Special Guests will Lois Bohovesky, Paula's mother, with a poetry reading District Attorneys Ken Gribetz and Tom Zugibe.

Dan Sullivan Foundation Fundraiser

The newly formed Dan Sullivan Foundation will hold its first event 7 p.m. Saturday at Albertus Magnus High School. The foundation is raising money for scholarships and charitable efforts in the name of Dan Sullivan, a Pearl River native and former star athlete at Albertus Magnus and Dominican College who passed away from a heart attack Oct. 31, 2011.

Tickets cost $100 an include food, beverages, entertainment and entry into a $10,000 grand prize drawing. Rockland County March of Dimes March for Babies

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Blue Hill Plaza for the March for Babies, with the walk starting at 10 a.m. Funds raised go to help mothers have stronger, healthier babies, as well as raise awareness about premature births.
