Pearl River Sports: Swimming, Boys Soccer Battle Suffern; Tennis Tournament Begins

The Pearl River Tennis Tournament begins Friday at Pearl River High School and Cherry Brook Park. The Pearl River swimming team, which competed at Suffern Thursday, will be back in action Saturday against Nyack.

The Pearl River Girls Varsity Tennis Tournament begins 3:30 p.m. today with matches at Pearl River High School and Cherry Brook Park.

Pearl River will take on Tappan Zee, Albertus Magnus, East Ramapo, Nanuet and Nyack in the tournament. Rather than one singles bracket and one for doubles, the Pearl River Tournament is broken up into seven flights -- first singles, second singles, third singles, first doubles, second doubles, third doubles and fourth doubles). There will be medals for first, second, third and fourth place in each flight. The school that piles up the most games won in all flights combined takes the team championship.

Pearl River will be without top singles player Elina Arakelyan. The Pirates lineup is as follows:

  • First singles: sophomore Ciara O'Riordan
  • Second singles: senior Stacey Wang
  • Third singles: freshman Katie Ariyan
  • First doubles: senior Aileen Burke and freshman Sinead O'Sullivan
  • Second doubles: senior Joanna McIntyre and senior Jimin Son
  • Third doubles: sophmore Katie O'Hanlon and 8th grader Nicole Alkhazov
  • Fourth doubles: senior Lauren Finer and senoir Nikita Mehta

The matches are played at both sites over two days, with competition starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and the medal ceremony at approximately 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
