Pearl River senior Rob Gullo launched a weather balloon from Bethlehem Pennsylvania in June.

The balloon reached an estimated 90,000 feet during its journey before landing in Monsey, approximately a mile from the projected landing spot in Nanuet. Though the GPS stopped working during the flight, the action camera donated by Sony worked just fine, providing the images that are part of a video on YouTube here

"The statistics revealed that it was at 70 degrees below zero and moving with 150 mile per hour winds," Pearl River Superintendent Dr. John Morgano said during Tuesday's Pearl River Board of Education meeting. "It went across three states and landed at a site 1.5 miles from where he projected it will land. That's pretty good. That's the kind of innovation we see from our kids."

Gullo sent up the balloon as part of Pearl River's independent study program, working with Pearl River High School teacher Steven Lonergan. Lonergan is also an assistant coach for the Pearl River football team, on which Gullo is one of the captains and top players.

"Steven is a tremendous teacher," Pearl River High School Principal William Furdon said.
