College Sports Notebook:

The waiting game

Junior Mike Abelard of Spring Valley and sophomore George Erazo of North Babylon have done their bit, but now the St. Thomas Aquinas College track standouts can only wait to see how many athletes will be taken by the national committee to the NCAA Division II track and field national championships in Mankato, MN, on March 9-10.

Erazo and Abelard have hit the qualifying times for nationals, according to head coach Lorne Marcus.

Erazo competed in a very competitive field at the Armory Collegiate Challenge in upper Manhattan, and finished third overall in the 400 with a time of 48.65.

Erazo also was the top collegiate runner at the Last Chance Collegiate challenge at the Armory.

Abelard, a graduate of Ramapo HS, was competing in his third meet back from injury and ran a 22.67 in the 200 to finish 11th overall.

Junior Garvenchy Nicolas of Midwood hit an indoor personal best in the 800 with a time of 2:00.40, which took 13th overall.

Mortarboard musings

  • Marist College junior Matt Panebianco of Tappan finished seventh in the 800 with a time of 1:56.34 at the Last Chance Collegiate challenge at the Armory in upper Manhattan.
  • The Manhattan College women’s basketball clinched a top-four seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament with a 50-40 victory over Canisius in Buffalo. Maggie Blair of Briarcliff played nine minutes, getting two steals, an assist and one rebound for the Jaspers (16-13, 10-7 MAAC).
  • The College of Brockport, an elite DIII baseball program, swept Purchase College, 7-5, 7-0, in a season-opening doubleheader for both schools at Silver Lake Park in West Harrison. Third baseman Kevin McQuade of Mamaroneck went 0-for-2 in the opener as a third baseman, and was touched for the loss in relief after the Panthers led 4-3. Mike Marrone of Pleasantville went 0-for-1 in each game, while catcher Frank Fiumara of Port Chester went 0-for-3 in the second game.
  • The Nyack College baseball team, which took two games from St. Thomas Aquinas College at Provident Bank Park in Pomona to open the season, meets Bloomfield (NJ) College at 3 p.m. on Thursday in Newark, NJ. Senior right-hander Kevin Earlie of Moriches went the distance in the first game, allowing only three hits. Freshman righty Craig Jacobs of Hawthorne, NJ, earned his first collegiate victory after four innings of scoreless work in the second game.

Weekly Sports Poll

Major League Baseball lost a great earlier this month, former Met and Expo Gary Carter.

Two decades years after he retired, Carter was elected into the baseball Hall of Fame and many consider him one of the best catchers of all time.

But where do you think “Kid” ranks among the best New York back stops of all time?

Let us know your thoughts below in this week's sports poll.
