Daily Sports Digest: Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame Inducts Veltidi, Sullivan

Former Pearl River High School three-sport star Victor Veltidi, 82, will be inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame at the 39th Annual Induction Dinner 5 p.m. Sunday at the Pearl River Elks Club.

Veltidi was a standout in baseball, football and basketball at Pearl River and played minor league baseball briefly before being drafted in 1951 to serve in the Army during the Korean War. He chose not to return to professional baseball.

Pearl River native Dan Sullivan is also one of this year's seven inductees. Sullivan is already a member of the sports halls of fame at Albertus Magnus High School and Dominican College, where he was a 1,000-point scorer.

Sullivan passed away due to a heart attack Oct. 31, 2011 at the age of 57. The Dan Sullivan Foundation was recently formed in his name and will hold its first fundraising event May 5 at Albertus Magnus. 

Marcel Cooper of Nyack, Albertus Magnus alum John Diffley, Tom McTaggart of Suffern, Dennis O'Sullivan of North Rockland and Dawn Sugrue of Ramapo will also be inducted Sunday night.

Pearl River Softball Rolls Along

Pearl River defended their home field with overcast skies as the .

Sam Alicandri, Erin Woods and Shannon McKiernan each scored twice and Woods drove in a run in the shut out victory.

Mandy McCarthy and Caroline Kardashian combined for a three hit shut out in the victory.

Lauren Strum, Chinyere Oti, and Emile Cooper each picked up a hit in the loss for Clarkstown North.

Game: East Ramapo at Pearl River

Score: Pearl River won, 229-293

Highlights:  Senior Brian McGarvey turned in the low score of 42 to help Pearl River improve to 8-2 and drop East Ramapo to 0-6. 

Sport: Girls Lacrosse

Game: Albertus Magnus vs. Nyack

Score: Nyack Won 18-12

Highlights: Andie O’Sullivan picked up five goals for the Indians and Taylor O’Sullivan added four scores and an assist in the win. Madison Kandoth scored five times and had two assists in the loss.

Sport: Softball

Game: Nanuet vs. Albertus Magnus

Score: Nanuet Won 2-0

Highlights: Katie Vellardito picked up the win as she went all seven innings and struck out eight.
