Erazo, Abelard spark STAC

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s and women’s track and field teams go right back into action today following another solid performance.

The Spartans are competing today in Jamaica at the St. John’s University Invitational, and then compete on Saturday at the Rider Invitational in Lawrenceville, NJ.

At the University of Pennsylvania Invitational in Philadelphia, George Erazo of North Babylon continued an outstanding season.

STAC’s star sophomore sprinter won the 400-meter run with a time of 48.25, leading a quality field of 29 competitors.

Ramapo HS alum Mike Abelard of Spring Valley also ran very well at the meet, clocking 10.92 in the 100 to finish fifth out of 20 competitors, and running 20.04 in the 200, good for fourth place in a field of 29 competitors.

Garvenchy Nicolas of Brooklyn was 11th in a field of 33 runners in the 800 with a time of 1:57.53.

Kaitlyn Mancini of Long Island and Keeley Bateman of Pearl River stood out on the women’s side.

Mancini bettered her personal-best time in the 200 with 26.78, placing her 15th, and also ran the 100 in a time of 13.18, good for 14th.

Bateman ran the 800 in 2:22.46, placing her 10th.

Spartans sweep into first place

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team swept C.W. Post, 9-5, 7-0, to take over sole possession of first place in the East Coast Conference.

Matt Marotta of Suffern and Eric Cooper of Brooklyn picked up victories for the Spartans, who improved to 22-10 overall and 9-1 in conference play, while Post fell to 15-13, 7-3.

The Spartans, who have won 11 of their last 13 games, were also helped by Frank Salerno of New City, Ken Frawley of White Plains and Stanley Susana of the Bronx.

STAC and Post complete a three-game conference series today at C.W. Post, but the Spartans return home on Tuesday for another ECC matchup when Queens College visits Provident Bank Park in Pomona, with the first pitch slated for 3:30 pm.

STAC and rival Dominican College meet at PBP on Thursday, with the Spartans playing the role of the visiting team.

The Spartans are also scheduled for a non-conference tilt against Queens on Friday at “The Bank” at 3:30 p.m., before welcoming Caldwell College on Sunday for a game at noon.
