Daily Sports Digest: O'Toole Snatches Victory for Pirates

Pearl River varsity sports resumed play Tuesday, with the boys basketball team defeating Clarkstown South while the wrestling team lost at South.

Candace Young, a sophomore out of Tappan Zee HS, and senior Rachael Peterson of Wellesley, MA, provided a one-two punch in the diving event as the Northeastern University swimming and diving team raised its record to 5-3 following a 166-134 victory over the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

Peterson earned a score of 229.49 to finish second in the one-meter diving, while Young totaled 210.60 to collect third-place honors.

Northeastern swimmers captured at least three scoring places in 10 of 14 individual events, and at least two scoring places in every individual event. The Huskies also were victorious in one of two relays.

Northeastern is on a training trip to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, before returning to competition on Jan. 14, when it travels to Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware (4-2).

En Garde

Sophomore Stephen Moch of Larchmont, an alum of Riverdale Country School, went 10-4 overall in saber as the Princeton University fencing teams opened their dual-meet seasons at Penn State. The men’s and women’s team each went 4-1.

Both programs posted wins over Vassar, Sacred Heart, NYU and North Carolina, while the host Nittany Lions prevailed 14-13 in their respective matches.

Moch, whose senior brother Jonathan competes in foil, went 3-0 against both Vassar and NYU, finished 2-1 versus North Carolina, went 1-2 against Penn State, and 1-1 against Sacred Heart.

The two Princeton programs combined to finish fourth at last year’s NCAA Championships, behind Notre Dame, Penn State and St. John’s.

The Tigers and the Moch brothers open the New Year at the North American Cup in Portland, OR, scheduled Jan. 13 thru Jan. 16.

Highlights: Austin O’Toole led Pearl River with 17 points and he secured the victory with a late defensive rebound as the Pirates narrowly got the home win. Mike McCahey picked up 21 points in the loss.

Game: Pearl River vs. Clarkstown South

Score: Clarkstown South Won 46-33

Highlights: At 182 pounds, Clarkstown South’s Tome Marku pinned Brandon Ortega in 30 secounds and at 160, Drew Breyfogle pinned Pearl River’s Brendan Bourke in 2:34.
