Daily Sports Digest: Pearl River Football Falls in Florida

Pearl River lost to Gateway High School, 43-27, Tuesday on the third day of the 2012 KSA Events National Football Summer 7's at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

“These boys are so quick,” Pearl River Head Coach Jeff Michael said. “I am so very impressed with Florida football.”

Pearl River is facing teams that go two-deep on each side of the ball.

“Their coach was impressed with our abilities despite our lack of depth,” Michael said. “Our guys were going both ways.”

Pearl River's second game scheduled for Tuesday was canceled when Avery Park forfeited because its starting quarterback injured his shoulder.

2012 Kayser-Brady Memorial Tournament

Pearl River will play defending champion Nanuet for the softball championship 6 p.m. today in the Kayser-Brady Memorial Tournament on the Pearl River Little League Anderson Field Complex in Orangeburg.

West Nyack will play Suffern at 6 p.m. in the baseball title game.

Local High School Lacrosse Players To Compete In State Tournament

A group of 23 lacrosse players from Westchester, Rockland and other counties in the Hudson Valley will compete in this weekend’s Empire State Cup, a six-team tournament of players from throughout New York state.

Each team will play at least seven games during the tournament, which starts on Thursday. The Hudson Valley team plays Central at 2 p.m. on Thursday and Long Island at 6:30 the same day. The other regions with teams in the tournament are Western, New York City and Adirondack.

This year’s Cup is the first and the tournament, which goes through Sunday, will be played in Syracuse.

The head coach for the Hudson Valley team is Lew Janavey, who was the head coach of the Hudson Valley team in the now defunct Empire State Games in 2004. He was an assistant coach in the Empire State Games for the Hudson Valley from 1997-2003. He is also the Somers High School lacrosse head coach and coach of the WestRock travel summer program.

His assistant coaches are Brian Dalton, the current assistant lacrosse coach at Somers and a former assistant coach at St. John’s University, and Jon Jez, the current head coach at C.W. Post on Long Island and the chairman of the NCAA Division II Lacrosse Championship Committee.
