Wrestling engulfed the local sports landscape over the weekend as the best athletes across the Hudson Valley took part in the Sectional Championships.
The two day tournament started off on Saturday with Division 1 competing at and Division 2 taking place at Croton-Harmon.
On Sunday matches for both Divisions 1 and 2. In the team standings, Fox Lane narrowly defeated North Rockland for the top spot 172-168.5 in Division 1 and Nanuet easily won Division 2, scoring 277 points. Edgemont came in second with 236.
Five of Pearl River’s best young athletes competed in Division 1 of the tournament. James Kelley (99), Pat Hogan (120) and Chris Flynn (160) all fell in the first round.
Steve Moreno (138) beat Suffern’s James Desimone 6-3 in the first round but then he fell in the quarterfinals to Fox Lane’s Tom Grippi. Grippi pinned Moreno in 27 seconds.
Jon Muldoon (113) won each of his first three matches as he beat Hen Hud’s Mark Grant 8-4, East Ramapo’s Jon Alvarez 5-0, and North Rockland’s Troy Feniger 8-1. This set Muldoon up against third-seeded Alex Delacruz from Ossining for the championship.
Delacruz pinned Muldoon in 12 seconds to win the title giving the Pearl River sophomore a hard fought second-place finish.

Score: Highlights: Senior Joe Clinton led the Pirates with 28 points and Austin O’Toole added 15 in the win. Mahopac’s Brendan Hynes had 16 points in the loss.

Game: Pearl River vs. Ossining
Score: Highlights: Soniya Chong led undefeated Ossining with 37 points and Destini Walker scored 18. Pearl River suffered just their second loss of the season and Christa Scognamiglio led the Pirates with 14 points.

Game: Pearl River vs. Pawling
Score: Pearl River Won 6-3
Highlights: Brendan O’Dea led the Pirates with three goals and two assists in the win, Chris Alexander added 2 scores and Connor Ocasal found the back of the net once.

Game: Pearl River vs. North Rockland
Score: North Rockland Won 2-1 (OT)
Highlights: Andrew Rafferty and Sean Meigh both scored as North Rockland prevailed in overtime against Pearl River. Michael Henry had the lone Pirate goal in the loss.

Highlights: Tyler Sayre led the Falcons with 21 points as Pat McGuinness added 12 and Jack Sullivan tacked on 10 in the win. Tyrell Price and Malvin Rosario each had 14 points for North Rockland in the loss.

Game: Albertus Magnus vs. North Rockland
Score: Albertus Magnus Won 66-60
Highlights: Maeve Parahus picked up 32 points for the Falcons as Ryan Doherty added 11 and Kelly Guarino tacked on ten for Albertus Magnus in the win. Olivia Burden led North Rockland with 18 points in the loss.

Highlights: Meghan Keetley finished in fifth in the Woman’s USATF National Championship Mile Walk Finals with a time of 7:50.93. Teammate Caitlin Lardaro finished ninth in the race.
The boys 4x400 meter relay team of Kieran Brennan, Hans Lueders, Brenden Bateman and Tom Bonaro finished in fifth with a time of 3:27.43.
Pearl River’s 4x800 meter relay girls team finished 10th with a time of 9:37.82.

In High School Basketball, the Section 1 boys and girls basketball committees will met at 9 a.m. to determine the playoff pairings.
College Sports Notebook:
Dominican sweeps Nyack on hardwood
KC Jentzen of Pearl River, LaShonda Hathorne of Queens, and Marley Klunk of York, PA led the women’s team, and Leon Porter of Laurel, MD, sparked the men’s team in Dominican College's sweep a college basketball doubleheader against rival Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contests on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg.
Jentzen and scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Hathorne scored 13 points as the Lady Chargers defeated their counterparts from Nyack, 72-49, lifting their record to 11-10 overall and 10-4 in the CACC.
Klunk, who scored 10 points, had eight rebounds to share game-high honors with Nyack College’s Camille Nwosu of Centreville, VA.
The Dominican men’s team struggled against Nyack in a previous engagement before winning by three points. This time it time stamped its victory in 102-77 fashion behind Porter’s 26 points and five assists.
The win elevated the Chargers’ record to 14-7 all told, and 7-6 in conference play, while Nyack remained winless, including an 0-13 mark in the conference.
Preston Smith of Mays Landing, NJ, had a team-high seven assists.
Bonnies clinch first-round bye
Junior Alaina Walker of Pomona pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and spearheaded another strong defensive effort as the St. Bonaventure University women’s basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat the University of Dayton, 56-55, in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Dayton, OH.
Walker, a graduate of Albertus Magnus, added four points and an assist in the winning effort.
Senior Megan Van Tatenhove of Sheboygan Falls, WI, scored a game-high 17 points for the Bonnies (16-6, 8-2 A-10), who grabbed a stranglehold of the conference at 11-0 while extending a program-best 13-game winning streak that lifted its overall mark to a glittering 24-2.
The victory also clinched a first-round bye (top four teams) at the A-10 Championship next month.
The game was a match up of the league's best offense (Dayton, 72.2 points per game) and second-best defense (St. Bonaventure, 54.3 points per game) – a battle which the Bonnies won by holding Dayton to its lowest scoring output in its 10 A-10 games.
St. Bonaventure returns home to the Reilly Center to face Xavier on Saturday (Feb. 18) as part of Homecoming Weekend. The game will be broadcast nationally by CBS Sports Network and is the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s team. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. from Bob Lanier Court.
