Junior guard Matt Grossbard of Pearl River hit a three-pointer as time expired to lift the Roger Williams University men’s basketball team to a 59-56 win over Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Tansey Gymnasium in Boston, MA.

Grossbard’s heroics came after the Leopards – on their third chance – tied the game at 56-all with 3.3 seconds left.

Grossbard finished with 11 points as the Hawks shot 54.2 percent from the floor in the second half, including 60 percent from behind the arc.

The Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak, improving to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in league play. Wentworth dropped its second straight, falling to 7-5 (3-3). Both teams are in action Tuesday night (Jan. 17), as Roger Williams hosts Nichols and Wentworth is at Salve Regina.

Chargers hope to bounce back

The Dominican College men’s basketball team, coming off a 78-71 loss to Bloomfield (NJ) College, hopes to rebound on Wednesday night (Jan. 18) with its first of three road games.

Coach Joe Clinton's Chargers, who are 9-5, first travel to Bronxville to meet Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference rival Concordia College at 7 p.m.

The Chargers then meet Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA, on Jan. 21 before traveling to local rival Nyack College on Jan. 26.

Owls hoot and holler

Freshman guard Luke Houston of Pearl River scored 13 points and had three steals in 25 minutes, helping the Southern Connecticut State University men’s basketball team edge Merrimack College, 60-57, in North Andover, MA.

Junior forward Trevon Hamlet of Brooklyn led all scorers with 22 points for the Owls, who improved to 7-8 overall and 5-5 in Northeast-10 play.

Merrimack fell to 7-8 and 4-7 in the league.

Southern Connecticut visits Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH, tonight (Jan. 17) at 7:30 p.m.

Senior guard Hakeem Williams of Spring Valley, a graduate of St. Joseph’s Regional in Montvale, NJ, is averaging seven points per game for the host Hawks (7-8).

Golden Bears tamed

The Western New England University men’s basketball team hopes to snap a four-game slide tonight when the Golden Bears meet Curry College (4-8) in Milton, MA, at 8 p.m.

The Golden Bears are coming off a 77-69 loss to Eastern Nazarene at the Alunni Healthful Living Center in Springfield, MA.

Sophomore Kris Bergstol of New City and Clarkstown South is getting limited playing time for the Lions, who lifted their record to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).

Sophomore center Dennis Rinaldi of Harrison had nine points and seven rebounds for the Golden Bears (4-8, 1-5).

Historic win for Walker, Bonnies

Defensive specialist Alaina Walker of Pomona had six points, two rebounds  (three below her average), one assist and a steal as the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team raced out to a 12-0 start and never trailed en route to a program-record Atlantic-10 win with a 64-52 victory over visiting Saint Louis (6-12, 0-3) at the Reilly Center in Olean.

The Bonnies (16-2, 3-0 Atlantic 10) hope to extend the record at home on Wednesday (Jan. 18) at 7 p.m. against a very-fine Richmond University team. The Spiders are 14-3 after being picked to finish eighth in the A-10 preseason rankings.

The nation’s second-best ball-protecting team, the Bonnies committed a season-low two first-half turnovers while forcing the Billikens into eight giveaways.

The victory also extends what is the longest unbeaten streak in regular-season league action as the Bonnies have now won seven straight dating back to last season.

Dolphins stop slide

Senior forward Brittany Griffin of Suffern had an uncommon off-night, but the College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s basketball team halted a four-game losing streak with a 61-38 victory over Purchase College in Riverdale.

Griffin, an alumna of Albertus Magnus, was limited to two points, well below her season average of 8.2, and just two rebounds, also well below her average of 2.2 per game.

Picking up the slack as the Dolphins improved their record to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in the Skyline Conference were senior senior Kara McNish of Hawthorne, N.J., and sophomore Desiree Rosa of Dumont, NJ

McNish came up one point shy of her career-high with a game-high 18, and Rosa scored a season-high 13.

Senior guard Alyse LaPadula of New Rochelle pulled down nine rebounds for Purchase to go along with eight points and three steals.

The Dolphins hope to carry their momentum against league opponents when they host St. Joseph’s-LI on Tuesday (Jan. 17) at 7 p.m.

The Panthers (4-7) hope to rebound on Tuesday (Jan. 17), but they face a tall order when powerhouse Mount Saint Mary College of Newburgh comes to Purchase. Tip-off is set at 6 p.m. The visiting Knights have won 12 of their 14 games.

Freshmen forwards Natalie Canderelli of Cortlandt Manor and Kasey Heyda of Briarcliff Manor are getting playing time for the Knights. Heyda has appeared in 10 games while Canderelli has competed in nine.
