Daily Sports Digest: Softball All-Stars Kick Off Summer On Thursday

The Pearl River Softball 11-12 year old All-Star team opens up play this Thursday against New City at Pearl River's Anderson Field complex at 7 p.m. Pearl River will play again at home at 7 p.m. Friday in either the winners or losers bracket, depending on what happens Thursday.

The double-elimination bracket features five teams, including Stony Point and Haverstraw, who play each other in the first round, and South Orangetown, who has a bye.

The Pearl River team is managed by Ken McCarthy, and the additional coaches are Chris Woolgar and Jason Lee. The players are Kelly Campbell, Kaitlyn Harding, Asiana Lee, Riley Maloney, Jesse McCarthy, Kelsey Murphy, Michaela Murphy, Nicole Portington, Madison Reynolds, Kelli Scanlon, Emily Turilli and Meagan Woods.

Pearl River Little League

Pearl River's AAA team, the Brewers, are playing in the McRobbie Tournament of Champions this week on Nanuet Little League's field. The championship game is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lake Nanuet complex.

Pearl River will host the 9-10-year-old softball game 7 p.m. Monday on McCarthy Field in Pearl River's Anderson Little League Field Complex.

  • Nyack College women’s basketball coach Dave Julien has announced that Rachel Burnett, a 6-foot forward, is transferring from St. Leo’s University in Florida to join the Warriors this fall. Burnett scored more than 1,300 points in her high school career at Indian Rocks Christian School in Largo, FL.
  • The Westchester Community College Vikings were named co-winners of the Mid-Hudson Conference all-sports award, along with Orange County CC. The award goes to the school that did the best in conference play in all sports combined. The Vikings finished tied for first in baseball, third in softball, fourth in golf, won the women’s basketball championship and finished second in men’s basketball. The Vikings also finished second in Volleyball and soccer.
  • Former Westchester Community College football coach Max Bowman has been named the head coach at Houston Christian High School in Texas. Bowman, who coached the Vikings in the 1970s, has also coached at Texas El Paso, the University of Buffalo, Rutgers University, Boston College, Greenville and had a stint with the NFL Buffalo Bills.
  • Anthony Siguil of New Rochelle, a standout golfer at Westchester Community College, tied for 76th at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III national championships at Chautauqua Golf Club in Mayville.
  • The Northeastern University men’s hockey team, which went 13-16-5, will open the season with a rare Wednesday night battle at home against Merrimack on Oct. 10. Among the Huskies’ returnees are senior forwards and twin brothers Justin and Drew Daniels of Suffern. Justin placed sixth on the team in scoring last season, with 17 points on seven goals and 10 assists in 33 games. Drew played in 34 games, netting seven points.
