Kayser-Brady Tournament Opens Sunday

Pearl River Little League got back to using the Verizon parking lot for games at the Anderson Field Complex in Orangeburg in time for the 10-day tournament.

Pearl River Little League announced June 26 that the league had regained the right to use the Verizon parking lot for games at the Anderson Field Complex in Orangeburg. The lot had been closed to league use for most of June after a security breach at the Verizon Wireless building.

Though the league is looking into other options long term, getting the use of the Verizon parking back becomes very important with the 10th Annual Kayser-Brady Memorial set to begin with opening ceremonies 9:15 a.m. Sunday morning at the Anderson Field Complex.

The Billy Kayser Memorial Baseball Tournament is played in the name of 16-year-old Pearl River High School student who was killed in a car accident April 3, 2003. West Nyack is the defending champion in the 10-team tournament, which also includes Congers, Haverstraw, Nanuet, Nyack-Valley Cottage, Pearl River, Ramapo, South Orangetown, Stony Point and Suffern.

Nanuet will be looking for its third consecutive title in the Alicia Brady Memorial Softball Tournament, which is played in the name of a 15-year-old Pearl River High School student who also lost her life in an automobile accident. Brady died Feb. 26, 1992. New City/Congers, Nyack-Valley Cottage, Pearl River and South Orangetown will also compete in the five-team tournament.

Brady and Kayser both played for Pearl River Little League.

The baseball tournament opens with three games Sunday. Ramapo plays Nanuet at 9:30 a.m. on Bocket Field, followed by South Orangetown taking on West Nyack on McKiernan at 10 a.m. and Pearl River facing Stony Point at 11:30 a.m. at Bocket.

Both Sunday softball games will start at 10 a.m., with Nyack playing Valley Cottage on McCarthy Field and Nanuet facing New City-Congers on Brady Field.

Both tournament are scheduled for a week and a half with the championship games 6 .m. Wednesday, July 24.
