Lacrosse Sectionals: Corrected Bracket Takes Bye From Pearl River Girls

The Section 1 lacrosse playoff pairings meeting was held Tuesday morning. After initially being told they have a bye, the Pearl River girls will play Hastings at home Thursday. The boys will play at Dobbs Ferry Thursday.

When the Section 1 Class C girls lacrosse tournament pairings were first put together Tuesday morning, the Pearl River girls lacrosse team (11-4-1) had the a bye.

The committee found an error and re-worked the bracket, giving Pearl River the No. 3 seed and a home game 4:30 p.m. Thursday against No. 14 Hastings. Bronxville was moved up to the No. 2 seed.

The seedings are based on a formula that awards four points for each victory. Bonus points are given based on playing opponents with strong records, but in the end, playing a tough schedule did not help the Pearl River girls' seeding. The Pirates second and third seeds in Class B (Yorktown and Nyack respectively) and the No. 2 and No. 3 in Class A (Suffern and North Rockland).

'The info was wrong this morning," Pearl River coach Laurie Mayernik said. "We were penalized for playing 16 games, like you are supposed to, while Bronxville played 13. I wouldn't change it. I'd rather play the Yorktowns of the world and get better than not."
