Mike McCoy, 16, of Pearl River tried to keep his focus on his times rather than the opposition at the AAU Junior Olympic Games July 27 and 28 in Houston, TX.
That approach worked so well that McCoy won four gold medals, two silver and one bronze as well as two overall trophies.
"I did a lot better than I expected to," McCoy said. "They were not my best times or anything, but they were good enough to win medals. If you get a good time, it doesn't matter what everyone else gets. If you mess up badly, you are done either way."
McCoy took part in 18U teams that won gold in the 3-6-3 H-T-H Relay and the Cycle H-T-H and the Timed 3-6-3 Relays. He won his fourth gold in the age 15-18 male 3-6-3 Cycle, earning a trophy for the 10th best time regardless of age of age. McCoy took silver medals in the 18U Stack of Champions timed event and the 18U Relay Stack of Champions.
McCoy and Melissa Gomes took a bronze medal in the 18U doubles, also earning #6 overall (regardless of age group) in the event with the time of 9.34 seconds.
