Nyack Takes Team Title, Nanuet's Quill Outstanding Player at PRHS Tennis Tourney

Pirates Take 3rd Place Behind Outsanding Doubles Play

Nyack took home the team title and Nanuet’s Kevin Quill turned in a dominating performance to earn the outstanding player at the annual Pearl River High School Tennis Tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Indians won a total of 187 games and bested Tappan Zee's 176 while the host Pirates finished third with 153.  This event features a unique format with round-robin play among the competitors in a field that also included Albertus Magnus and East Ramapo.

Playing at first singles, Quill didn’t surrender a game in  the competition winning his five matches at love.  It was his fourth appearance in this tournament.

“It’s great to have a chance to play everyone in the league and to play a lot of matches.," Quill said. "I played very consistently today.”

Nyack coach Josh Weinman was pleased with his team’s efforts.

“This is a good tournament," Weinman said. "We get a chance to compete and have fun.  My team played as I hoped they would.  I enjoy this event every year”

Pearl River used strong performances in doubles play to score the bulk of their points.  Jeremy Rosen and Sam Berry teamed up to win at the first doubles slot while Brendan Rogers and Kevin Malley took the fourth doubles title.  Pearl River finished as the runner up in the second and third flights.

Rosen was happy with the victory but said that there was a lot more to this day.

“Everything went well for us but also all the schools got together," Rosen said. "It is enjoyable and the competition is good.  We were consistent and we didn’t beat ourselves.”

“It is a great tournament and we had great weather," Rogers said. "Also good fan support.  We won because we had good communication and played consistently.”

Pearl River coach Joan Smith, whose responsibilities on Saturday included not only directing her team but also administering a six-team event at two locations (Pearl River High School and Cherry Brook Park), took the view that the great weather was critical to making the tournament a success.

“(We had) really good competition in all the flights, lots of inter-school comradeship and the dominance of Kevin Quill in our league,” Smith said.
