Pearl River, Nanuet Bowling Split

The Pearl River boys beat Nanuet, but the Nanuet girls defeated Pearl River Thursday at New City Bowl.

The Pearl River and Nanuet boys and girls bowling teams split their match Thursday at New City Bowl, with the Pearl River boys and Nanuet girls coming out victorious.

The girls match came down the final frame of the third game. At one point, roughly two bowlers into the final frame, the teams were tied, each knocking down 677 pins.

Pearl River briefly took the lead in the final frame, but the Golden Knights (52-36) broke away thanks to Sarah Ryan’s consecutive strikes in the 10th to give Nanuet a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

The Pirates (57-34) won the first game, 857-710, but Nanuet bounced back to win the second game, 780-697, and the much-closer final game, 760-741.

“The girls bowled well in the first game, but the second one just didn’t go too well for us,” said Pearl River coach Marni Torgersen. “That third game, though, that was a tossup. That could’ve gone either way.”

Nanuet’s Brianne Healy led all girls with a score of 573 in the three games, followed by teammate Morgan McCarney’ s 563. Pearl River was led by Sarah O'Malley’s 517. Pearl River finished with a higher point total, knocking down 2295 pins to Nanuet’s 2250.

The boys match was much more one-sided, with the Pearl River boys winning all three games.

“The boys have been bowling exceptionally well of late,” said Torgersen. “They bowled today about what I’ve come to expect from them.”

The Pirates (57-34) dropped a total of 2860 pins in their three games, while the Golden Knights (20-71) knocked down 2370. The first game was close, with Pearl River winning 887-855, followed by the Pirates winning the second game 973-844 and the third game 1,000-671.

Pearl River’s Brian Edsall led all bowlers with a score of 667, followed by his teammate Paul Owens’ 597. Nanuet’s high-scorer was Joe Kuhn with 525.
