Pearl River Appoints Baseball, Girls Lacrosse Coaches

The Pearl River School District did not have to look far to find new head coaches for the baseball and girls lacrosse teams.

Coaches who had been assistants will be taking over both programs.

The Pearl River Board of Education approved the appointments of Michael Oliva as head baseball coach and Diana Gillule and Damon O'Keefe as co-head coaches for girls lacrosse during its meeting Tuesday night.

Oliva takes replaces Bruce Miller, who retired from coaching at the end of last season after being the Pirates head coach since 1989. Oliva worked as an assistant coach for the baseball team in 2013 and in 2011. He is also the head football coach at Irvington High School and teaches at River View High School in Nyack, part of the BOCES system.

Gillule takes over for Laurie Mayernik, who had planned to resign as coach after the 2013 season, but stepped down before the team's final game. Gillule also filled in as head coach while Mayernik served a suspension during the season.

She will share head coaching duties with Damon O'Keefe, who had been the varsity assistant the previous two seasons, helping the Pirates win the lone section title in the program's history in 2011. He coached modified last spring. O'Keefe is also the head coach for the Pearl River boys soccer team.
