Pearl River Sends Athletes to Millrose Games

Pearl River will send two relays and two individual competitors to the Millrose Games Saturday at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City.

The Millrose Games are moving from Madison Square Garden to the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City and Pearl River Pirates will be there.

Pearl River will send two relay teams and two individual competitors to the Millrose Games, which start 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Millrose Games began in 1908 and are one of the most prestigious track and field events held in the United States.

“It’s still a huge meet,” Pearl River girls track and field Head Coach Dan Doherty said. “It might be more impressive to the general public if it was still at Madison Square Garden. Some of the best runners in the world will be there competing. Many, many Olympic gold medalists and world champions (compete).

“It’s a nice honor (for the Pearl River competitors) to be in it. Hopefully it is a chance to get a really good performance.”

On the girls side, the team of Kelly Hayes, Marie Kohlrenner, Ceili McMorrow and Molly Shine will run in the SuperRunners Metropolitan High School Girls 4X800 Relay. They ran their qualifying time of 9:34.50 Feb. 1 in the Metropolitan Invitational. The top qualifier is Mt. St. Dominic of New Jersey with a time of 9:09.69.

Caitlin Lardaro and Meghan Keetley will compete in the Women’s USATF National Championship Mile Walk.

The Pearl River team of Tom Bonaro, Kieran Brennan, Brendan Bateman and Hans Lueders will run in the Boys Suburan High School 4X400-meter relay. Their qualifying time is 3:26.40.

“Just to be around the big-time athletes, hopefully they will be inspired by them,” Doherty said.
