Gas Line Ruptured Near Tappan Zee High School

The incident happened near dismissal time and students were sent home without incident. All after school activities at Tappan Zee High School Wednesday were cancelled.

All after school activities at Tappan Zee High School were cancelled Wednesday due to a ruptured gas line on Dutch Hill Road near the school property.
According to spokesman Mike Donovan, Orange & Rockland Utilities was notified of the leak at 2:24 p.m. and responded to the scene. O&R workers closed off the valve and the scene was declared safe by 2:55 p.m. Work continues to restore gas service to 44 customers, including Tappan Zee High School.

"A contractor was doing some directional drilling and drilled into the four-inch gas main," Donovan said.

According to B.J. Greco of the South Orangetown Central School District, all students were sent home without incident and there were no injuries reported. She said the Orangeburg Fire Department also responded to the incident.

Among the events cancelled was a boys basketball game against Pearl River. No make-up date for the game has been announced yet.
