Pearl River Boys Basketball Earns Road Win At Nanuet
The Pirates used an aggressive defense to win, 58-42, Tuesday.
Pearl River boys basketball Coach Jerry Houston, Jr. felt that his team was playing defense very passively over the last month, so he dedicated a lot of practicetime to getting more aggressive.
Tuesday at Nanuet, the extra work paid off as the Pirates showed a much more aggressive defense, forcing the Knights to turn the ball over 13 times in the first half alone. During that span Nanuet only attempted nine shots.
Pearl River used an aggressive defense and dominant second half to beat Nanuet 58-42 at Nanuet.
“It’s taken us a little while to become more aggressive, pushing up playing the ball a little bit more, doing a little more pressing from time to time to generate some offense and get some emotion going,” Houston said. “It’s a little easier when you’re pressing full-court and doing some different trapping things to get going defensively.”
The Pirates (9-5) held an eight-point lead over the Knights (3-11) at the half, but opened up the game thanks to big second halves by Austin O’Toole and Joe Clinton. Nanuet Coach Dave Masterson thought there were a few reasons Pearl River blew the game open in the second half.
“A couple breakdowns defensively, miscommunication, matchup problems and they started hitting some shots they were missing in the first half,” Masterson said.
Sean Wilson led the Pirates with 14 points, followed by O’Toole’s 13, Clinton’s nine and Tom Davis’ eight.
Nanuet’s Robert Tutein led all scorers with 21.
