Pearl River Boys Lacrosse Cruises Past Dobbs Ferry in Playoffs

Even as Pearl River began to pull away from Dobbs Ferry in Wednesday’s Section 1 Class C preliminary round playoff game at Pearl River, the Pirates were conscious of leads they had lost this season.
“Whenever we are leading by a lot, I have to remember in my head it can always turn around,” Pearl River senior goalie John Beckerle said. “It’s happened to us before.”
It never came close to happening Wednesday. Pearl River dominated the third quarter to put away a 17-5 victory and advance to play at No. 2 seed Pleasantville 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
“We wanted to make sure we started the third quarter strong and we got one early,” Pearl River Head Coach Al Staker said. “It gave us that extra confidence in the third and fourth quarter, realizing we should be ok if we keep doing what we’re doing. We just needed to keep playing as we were and we did. Everyone contributed today.”
Junior Joe Mayernik led the offense with three goals and three assists and Peter Moreau had three goals and one assist, but senior Sean Edwards drew one of the biggest cheers with his first career goal in the fourth quarter.
“It was nice,” Staker said. “The kids had some fun finally. We hadn’t done that in a while. “We knew if we gave them confidence, it could be a tough one, but we were able to get up early, keep going and finally get an easy one.”
The Pirates know that isn’t likely to happen against Pleasantville.
“It’s going to be hard,” Beckerle said. “We are all ready to try our best and see where we can take it.”
