Pearl River Boys Soccer Blanks TZ to Win Opener

Pearl River defeated Tappan Zee, 3-0, at home in the season opener for the two rivals Tuesday.

Thunder delayed the second half of Tuesday’s boy’s soccer game between Pearl River and Tappan Zee.

Once it finally got under way, it was the Pirates who delivered a big bang of their own. Pearl River’s Brian Chiarello scored on a pass from Alex Castillo just nine seconds into the second half.

It was Pearl River’s second goal en route to a 3-0 win at home to open the season. The teams tied in two meetings last year.

Pearl River’s first goal came from Chris Beers, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead heading into the half. Castillo scored a goal of his own later in the second half on a pass from Alex Jeremie. Pirates goalie Austin Maggiolo saved six shots in the win.

Pearl River will play 4 p.m. Thursday at North Rockland.

Pearl River Girls Tie Byram Hills

The Pearl River girls soccer team opened its season with a 1-1 tie at Byram Hills Tuesday in a rematch of the 2011 section quarterfinals. The two teams split two meetings last season, with Byram Hills taking the season opener and Pearl River winning in the playoffs.

The Pirates will look for their first victory of the season 4 p.m. Friday at North Rockland.
