Pearl River Giants Win With Walk-Off Blast

Kevin Scrima delivered a two-run home run in the bottom of the 6th to give his Giants a 9-8 win over West Nyack

The Pearl River Giants took on the West Nyack Twins in the 51st Journal News Little League baseball Tournament of Champions Tuesday at Leo Laders Field in Haverstraw.

Trailing by a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Giants’ Kevin Scrima stepped up to the plate with the tying run on second. Scrima was looking for more than a tie game and with a 2-2 count, he blasted a pitch over the right-center wall to give the Giants a 9-8 win.

“I was thinking that if someone got on base, I could end it, and I did,” said Scrima. “The pitch was up and away and I just went with it. That was a lot of fun.

The Giants will move on to face the Nanuet Cubs at 7:45 p.m. Thursday evening in Haverstraw.

“I’m so proud of the way the guys play out there,” said Giants Manager Chris Woolgar. “This game had a lot of ups and downs and they stayed with it. They know that no matter if we are up or down at the moment, we can still turn it around. We never quit.”
