Pearl River Girls Enter Playoffs as Top Seed

Pearl River boys basketball head coach Jerry Houston hoped his team did enough to earn a first-round home game in the Section 1 Class A playoffs with _Friday's 67-60 victory over Mahopac_.

The win did propel the Pirates (12-6) to the No. 8 seed in Class A, but with 25 teams in the bracket, only the top 7 seeds got byes into the first round. Pearl River will have to win an outbracket game at home Wednesday against Yonkers (4-14) to get another home game in the first round Feb. 17.

If Pearl River wins Wednesday, the Pirates would get a home game against either Riverside or Nyack Friday.

There is a chance Pearl River could host a boys/girls doubleheader against Nyack Friday. The Pearl River girls (16-2) earned the top seed in Class A. Nyack (7-11) will play at home against Pelham (8-10), with the winner set to play at Pearl River Friday.

The Pearl River boys and girls both swept home-and-home regular-season series with Nyack this season.

The full pairings for Section 1 are below. The game times for Pear River's games had not been set as of 2 p.m. Monday. Check back with Pearl River Patch for updates.

Albertus Magnus and Tappan Zee will both be hosting boys/girls first-round doubleheaders Friday.

Local Boys Basketball

• Undefeated Tappan Zee (18-0) is the top seed in Class A. The Dutchmen will open up at home Friday against the winner of an outbracket game between Lakeland and Spring Valley.
• Albertus Magnus (16-2) is the No. 2 seed in Class B. The Falcons will play at home 8 p.m. Friday against No. 15 Putman Valley. Dobbs Ferry (17-1) got the top seed in Class B and the first-round bye that goes with it.

• Tappan Zee (16-2) is the No. 2 seed in Class A and will play either Poughkeepsie or Eastchester at home Friday.
• No. 4 Albertus Magnus (14-4) will play either Brewster or Yonkers in its first-round game at home 6 p.m. Friday.
