Pearl River Girls Soccer Falls in States

Cornwall rallied to beat Pearl River, 2-1, in the regional semifinals Saturday at Arlington.

Less than 24 hours after beating Somers on penalty kicks for the Section 1 Championship, Pearl River took the field against Section 9 Champion Cornwall at Arlington in the first round of the state tournament.

Pearl River took a one-goal lead into halftime, but could not hold the advantage. Caroline Staudle scored on a header with 1:43 remaining to give Cornwall the 2-1 victory over Pearl River in the regional semifinal game.

"Four games in six days just killed us in the end," Pearl River Head Coach Tim Peabody said. "We outplayed them, but couldn't finish well with numbers in the box. Just too much fatigue."

Senior forward Casey Walsh scored Pearl River's lone goal on an assist by senior midfielder Marissa Scognamiglio in the 27th minute. It was Walsh's sixth goal and ninth point in five playoff games. Freshman goalie Lauren Gallagher made 11 saves for Pearl River, which finished the season 16-2-3.

Cornwall will play Section 4 Champion Vestal in the regional finals.
