Pearl River Hosts Two-Day Tennis Tournament

The Pearl River High School Tennis Tournament will be held at the high school and Cherry Brook Park today and Saturday.

The Pearl River boys tennis team won't play its first league match until April 23 at Albertus Magnus, but the Pirates will get a preview of their league starting today.

League members Nanuet, Nyack, Albertus Magnus and Tappan Zee will join Pearl River and East Ramapo in the Pearl River Boys Tennis Tournament, which begins 3:45 p.m. today at Pearl River High School and Cherry Brook Park.

"What I like this year is we haven't played any league matches yet," Pearl River Head Coach Joan Smith said. "It's a good preview for the season ahead."

Play will continue 8 a.m. Saturday morning, with the medal ceremony early in the afternoon, most likely between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

The tournament has a unique format, with the singles players and doubles team for each participating squad playing one set against an individual or doubles team from every other school. So the top singles players in the section will all play another, as will the top doubles teams.

The top three finishers in each bracket will earn medals. The team that wins the most sets will take the championship. Nyack is the defending team champion.

"Even if you are not winning our flight, it is important to take as many games as you can," Smith said.

This creates a large number of sets to be played, which accounts for splitting between two locations.

Sam Berry and Rajat Rao have been teaming up to play first doubles for Pearl River in its matches against big schools so far this season, winning every match they have played as a team, but they will be back in their places as first and second singles for this weekend's tournament. Senior Jack Mikuszewski will be at third singles.

"I'm happy with the team," Smith said. "It's a nice bunch of boys. My No. 1 has been on the varsity for six years. It's nice to have returning players.
