Pearl River's Muldoon Reaches State Wrestling Semis

John Muldoon of Pearl River will face Ossining's Alex Delacruz in the New York State Division 1 Wrestling semifinals at 120 pounds today.

Pearl River wrestling coach Grier Yorks said John Muldoon anxiously awaited a rematch with Ossining's Alex Delacruz after losing to him in the 113 pound section finals in 2012.

"He was looking forward to it all year," Yorks said. "We even set up a dual meet for them, but Delacruz was (injured). They were supposed to meet at Shoreline, but John lost in the semifinals. They finally met at Eastern States and it ended weird."

Muldoon led that match when Delacruz was disqualified. They met again in the .

Muldoon, the No 2 seed, and No. 3 Delacruz will battle again today in the New York State Division 1 semifinals in Albany. Top seed Steve Michel of Lancaster faces Travis Passaro of Eastport in the other semifinal.

Muldoon won two matches Friday to make the semis, beating Joe Russ of St. Anthony's, 7-5, in overtime in the first round and earning a 7-0 decision over Blake Retell of Shaker in the quarterfinals.

Pearl River teammate James Kelly lost in the first round Friday, a 4-1 decision against Huntington's John Aceri, the top seed in the bracket.
