Pearl River's Ryan Blanks Nanuet Baseball

Brendan Ryan struck out 13 batters in a one-hit shutout as Pearl River defeated Nanuet, 1-0, on the road to clinch the league championship.

Pearl River senior pitcher Brendan Ryan took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of Thursday's game at Nanuet, but the Pirates did not give him a lead until the top of that inning.

Tommy Higgins came through with a two-out single to score John Doherty with the game's only run in the top of the seventh.

Ryan lost the no hitter in the bottom of the seventh, but held on to the shutout as Pearl River defeated Nanuet, 1-0.

Ryan struck out 13 batters in the victory for the Pirates, who improved to 12-6 and 7-0 in league play. Pearl River clinched the league championship with the victory, though they still have a game with Tappan Zee at home 4 p.m Friday.

Doherty led off the top of the seventh inning with a single. Senior catcher John Brebbia bunted him over to set up the game-winning hit by Higgins.

Doherty was 2-for-3 with a stolen base in the game.

Nanuet starting pitcher Matt Dillon struck out six in five shutout innings. Ben Bohlke singled for the Golden Knights' only hit.
