Pearl River Softball Opens Title Defense Friday

Pearl River is the No. 1 seed in the Section 1 Class A tournament. The Pirates will play 4:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of an outbracket game between No. 16 John Jay and No. 17 Panas.

Pearl River (17-1) will open its pursuit of a fifth consecutive section championship as the No. 1 seed in Class A. 

The Pirates are scheduled to play a first round game at home 4:30 p.m. Friday. They will take on the winner of the outbracket game being played Thursday between Panas and John Jay. 

Pearl River would have home field for every game leading up to the championship. The quarterfinals are set for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29. Pearl River would play the winner of No. 9 Ardsley at No. 8 Beacon.

The softball semifinals are scheduled for May 31. Pearl River could face a third game against rival Tappan Zee (14-5), the No. 5 seed in the tournament, in that round. Tappan Zee's will play in the first round Friday against the winner of an outbracket game between No. 21 Poughkeepsie and No. 12 Yonkers.

The Section 1 championship games are set for Saturday, June 2 at Heroes Field in Nanuet, with Class B at 3 p.m., Class A at 5:30 p.m. and Class AA at 8 p.m

In addition to two victories over Tappan Zee, Pearl River has beaten No. 2 Pelham, No. 4 Harrison and No. 6 Eastchester this season. The Pirates did not play No. 3 seed Ursuline. Pearl River also has victories over Class AA playoff teams Horace Greeley, Suffern, Clarkstown North and North Rockland and Class B No. 2 seed Valhalla this season. 

Pearl River's lone defeat came against Clarkstown South, the No. 3 seed in the Class AA tournament. Clarkstown South opens the Class AA tournament at home Friday against No. 14 Scarsdale. 

Among other Rockland County teams:

  • Nanuet is the No. 11 seed in Class A and will play an outbracket game at home against Port Chester Thursday
  • Nyack is the No. 15 seed in Class A and will play an outbracket game at home Thursday against Riverside
  • Albertus Magnus is the No. 10 seed in Class B and will play at No. 7 Pleasantville Friday. 
  • Clarkstown North is the No. 12 seed in Class AA and will play at No. 5 Carmel Friday.
  • North Rockland is the No. 13 seed in Class AA and will play at No. 4 Fox Lane Friday.
  • Suffern is the No. 7 seed in Class AA and will play at home Friday against Horace Greeley.

Pearl River will complete its regular season 4:15 p.m. today at home against Nyack in a game that has been postponed due to rain three times.
